Achievement Award for British Bangladeshi students

High Commissioner of Bangladesh to UK Dr M Sayeedur Rahman Khan has called upon the students to work for strengthening ties between the two countries. Speaking at the outstanding achievement award ceremony for the British Bangladeshi Students of GCSE and GCE A level examinations 2011, he said that the success achieved by these students would bring both the countries closer besides enhancing the image of their country. He also congratulated the parents and the teachers saying that the success of the students had been possible only due to their efforts, guidance and encouragement.

The High Commissioner asked the students not to forget their roots while serving this country. He pointed out that last year 72 students were given awards but this year their number had risen to 108 while the girl students had superseded the boys in performance this year.

Bangladeshi State Minister of Women’s and Children’s Affairs Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said this was the right time for the students to decide about their career and choose their future field that would hone their leadership talents. The role the parents and teacher would not come to an end with this but the students would need their guidance and encouragement during their whole life too. She said that the students also had the responsibility to explore new avenues for the new comers who were following them. She informed that the Bangladeshi government was striving for the education of girls and empowerment of women and new education policy had been introduced for the purpose while the number of girl students in schools had also shown increase. Today women were holding all important offices from cabinet to other higher posts, a phenomenon very rare for other countries.

Rushanara Ali MP said the success achieved by the students especially the girls was quite encouraging but it was deplorable that some children could not continue their studies for different reasons that needed community’s attention as well as concrete measures on the part of the government.

Stephen Timms MP, Frank Dobson MP, Nicky Morgan MP and others speaking on the occasion called the Awards’ giving ceremony by the High Commission as a good effort on its part and said keeping the flags of both the countries flying high rested with these students. Later awards and commendation certificates were given away to 60 students who passed GCSE exam and 40 students of the GCE A level.
